- Here are the unit 7 vocabulary words. You will be having a quiz on these on Friday.
- You will also be having an allusions test on Thursday. Here is a link to the allusions you'll need to know for the test.
- This week you will be writing two different essays, too. One will be about disobedience, and you'll need to reference the works we've been reading and viewing in class for the essay. Then second essay will be your second official rhetorical analysis piece. This will be the big leagues, where I hand you a prompt and you go to town. That will take place on Wednesday most likely. Be prepared.
- Grades are updated! Be mindful of the late work policy, but get as many missing assignments turned in as you still can.
- If your grade isn't where you'd like it to be, check the post before this one for an extra learning opportunity (read: EXTRA CREDIT).
I hope you enjoyed your long weekend! We've got lots of reading and writing and talking and test-taking to do this week, so get prepared. Here are some reminders:

So here's the deal, my sweets. I want us to be doing more with your weekly vocabulary. What we're going to do is this. I want you to be keeping an eye out for your vocabulary word in your reading--whether that reading is for class, for pleasure, or just for acquiring knowledge.
When you come across one of your vocabulary words in your reading, either bring me the article or book that it's featured in, take a screenshot of the word being used, or simply take a photo of the page. If you record it electronically, simply email me the file. The vocabulary word can be any vocabulary word we've studied so far this year (or variation of a vocabulary word--for example, our vocabulary word was megalomania, but you could find megalomaniac and submit it for credit). For each word that you find, you will receive one bathroom pass (maximum of one each week). Today in class we ended up doing a lesson that was a bit of a tangent. We were discussing the "drinking the Kool-Aid" saying and decided to research and learn more about the Jonestown Massacre. We also watched the documentary below. Tomorrow we'll discuss the moral and ethical implications of blind obedience. We'll be reading Erich Fromm's essay about disobedience as well. Get excited!
Bonus learning opportunity! The above images were distributed during WWII. Write me a few sentences explaining what argument is being made in the photos. What rhetorical strategies do you see? Today in class we discussed and wrote thesis statements for the prompts in the document below. You also read pp. 3-14 in Everything's an Argument. If you did not finish reading, you need to finish reading for homework. Be ready to discuss the content of those pages in class tomorrow.
Hola! Today in class you worked on self and peer assessment. You received your group assignments as well. The assessment guidelines are below. Tomorrow we're going to start reading from Everything's an Argument, so be sure to bring your textbook to class if it's not already in the room. If you are reading this on a mobile device, you may want to click on the file below to access the assessment guidelines.
Today in class you wrote your rhetorical analysis for the JFK prompt, and we read and discussed sample student essays for the same prompt when you finished.
Tomorrow you'll be self-assessing your papers, and you'll receive your peer assessment group assignments. Then you'll peer-assess each other's papers (don't worry--we'll discuss what you'll need to do). Want a fun bonus opportunity? Tell me what the best gift you ever received was. Leave a comment on this post (you can't just tell me in person for this one) explaining what the gift was, who gave it to you, why it was special, etc. and you'll receive a bathroom pass. Today in class we went over the vocabulary words for unit 6 (you will, of course, have a quiz on those on Friday), and we read through and annotated the JFK rhetorical analysis passage. You were asked to write your thesis statement for the essay. Tomorrow you will write the actual essay. Hi, darlings! Today in class we reviewed and assessed student essays for the community service GHSWT prompt.
I will not be in class on Friday the 12th, and you will have a substitute. You will be taking a quiz, reading and annotating "Young Goodman Brown," and answering questions for the short story. Your unit 5 vocabulary words are here if you need them to study. Have a great weekend! Today in class you took your second rhetorical strategies test, we discussed the SAT's (and what you need to be doing to ace them), and we talked about thesis statements. Also, we debated about the best kind of pizza you can get in Savannah. Hint: it's a whole pizza from Vinnie's. In case you were absent or didn't get good enough notes, here's the presentation we used in class today. Happy thesis statement writing! |
